Types of Misdemeanor Crimes

While it is true the penalties for misdemeanor charges are not as severe as those for felonies, the impact of a conviction is still serious. If you are convicted of a misdemeanor crime, you could face incarceration, fines, and probation. All these things could easily affect your job, schooling, and relationships.

Examples of misdemeanor crimes include:

It is important to note that the above is not a complete list of misdemeanor crimes. To fully understand your charges and what they mean for you, consult with our team at S|D Law. When you hire us, our years of knowledge and expertise are at your disposal.

What are the Penalties for a Misdemeanor in Tennessee?

In Tennessee, misdemeanor offenses are classified into three classes: Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each class carries its own set of penalties, and the severity of consequences escalates with the class of the offense.

Class A Misdemeanors:

  • Punishable by up to 11 months and 29 days in jail
  • Fines up to $2,500

Class B Misdemeanors:

  • Maximum jail time of six months
  • Fines up to $500

Class C Misdemeanors:

  • Jail time is capped at 30 days
  • Fines up to $50

Apart from potential jail time and fines, a misdemeanor conviction can have long-lasting consequences, affecting employment opportunities, professional licenses, and personal relationships. Our team at S | D Law understands the gravity of these charges and is dedicated to providing a robust defense strategy tailored to your specific case.

Defense Strategies for Misdemeanor Charges

While every case is unique, some common defenses against misdemeanor charges may include:

  • Lack of Evidence: If there are gaps or inconsistencies, we leverage them to create a compelling argument in your defense.
  • Constitutional Violations: Any violation of your constitutional rights during the arrest or investigation process can be grounds for dismissal. We can scrutinize law enforcement procedures to identify any breaches that may have occurred.
  • Mistaken Identity: In some cases, individuals may be wrongly identified as the perpetrator. We can work diligently to establish a strong alibi or present evidence that challenges the accuracy of eyewitness accounts.
  • Illegal Search and Seizure: If evidence was acquired through an illegal search or seizure, it may be deemed inadmissible in court. We can examine the circumstances surrounding the collection of evidence to identify any Fourth Amendment violations.
